NEPTUNE - Local officials last week announced plans for a new information center where residents and business owners can learn more about the township's proposed West Lake Avenue redevelopment project.
The information center, housed in a trailer at 1716 West Lake Ave., will serve as the headquarters of the Neptune-based Midtown Urban Renaissance Corp. The agency is finalizing a schedule of hours and days that the information center will be open to the public.
The $100 million redevelopment proposal calls for commercial and residential units on West Lake Avenue, from Route 35 to the Asbury Park border.
It is one of three proposed redevelopment zones within the midtown section of Neptune, and one of four within the town. Mayor Thomas J. Catley has said the plan would bring jobs to the area, home ownership to the neighborhood and tax revenues to the town.
An administrative worker will be at the trailer three or four days a week to talk with the public and answer phone calls. If that worker cannot answer a question, then a representative of the township, the Renaissance Corp., or CityWorks, the nonprofit developer of the project, will respond, said Gail Oliver, who is president of the nonprofit corporation that has nine board members and six officers.
The trailer also will have brochures, pictures and a slide show so residents and business owners can see the conceptual plan, she said.
"The purpose of the site is to serve the community," she said.
Oliver said her agency also plans to put together workshops for residents and business owners directly involved with the redevelopment.
"We will inform (them), take questions and spend as much time as needed to answer questions of business owners and residents about their property," she said.
Catley said CityWorks is now gathering appraisals for the properties in the redevelopment zone and later will enter into negotiations with property owners. He said tentative agreements already have been reached with some owners.
Lester Goldberg, the president of Scrubber Doctor on Route 35, one of the affected businesses, said his company currently is in negotiations with CityWorks and the township.
Eventually, the trailer also will be used as the marketing center for residential and commercial property available in the redevelopment zone, said Tom Clark, the executive director of CityWorks.
Residents can reach the Midtown Urban Renaissance Corp. at (732) 776-8775 or by writing to P.O. Box 337, Neptune NJ 07754.
